Universality was not the only aspect of the event to celebrate. With World Judo Day only just behind us, we can be proud that so many countries are present in Abu Dhabi, working together, showing that everyone belongs in the wider judo family. The 2026 theme is being respected everywhere we look, around the IJF team, the local organisers and the delegations.
Continuing the celebrations, during the moments immediately before the final block, there was a special presentation for members of the UAE team, most notably their first ever world champion Yelyzaveta Lytvynenko. Lytvynenko was presented with a unique medal on behalf of United Arab Emirates Judo Federation President HE Mohammed Thaaloob Alderei, in recognition of her historic win in Baku just three weeks ago.
Following Lytvynenko’s award, Nugzari Tatalashvili was recognised for his career, on the occasion of his retirement. The 36-year-old Olympian has several World Judo Tour medals to his name as well as two continental medals. A highlights video was played in the arena to mark the end of his competitive career and he was honoured on the podium.
With so much to enjoy on day one in Abu Dhabi, the anticipation for day two is palpable. Tune in to JudoTV.com from midday local time to catch all the action from the middleweights.
