-63kg: TASHIRO proves her worth for Japan to boost Tokyo 2020 hopes

World Judo Masters bronze medallist and three-time world medallist TASHIRO Miku (JPN) defeated former Tashkent Grand Prix winner Daria DAVYDOVA (RUS) to win her second Grand Slam gold medal. World number seven TASHIRO hooked in for an o-uchi-gari which sent her Russian rival over for the maximum score as the Japanese judoka topped a field which included Olympic champion Tina TRSTENJAK (SLO) but not Clarisse AGBEGNENOU (FRA) who picked up an injury in Paris.

In the first semi-final Lubjana PIOVESANA (GBR) was disqualified against TASHIRO after accumulating three shidos. In the second semi-final DAVYDOVA shocked Osaka Grand Slam winner DOI Masako (JPN) by ippon.

The first bronze medal contest was won by DOI who pinned down Tel Aviv Grand Prix bronze medallist Sanne VERMEER (NED) with a kuzure-yoko-shiho-gatame for 20 seconds and ippon.

The second bronze medal was won by Paris Grand Slam bronze medallist Andreja LESKI (SLO) who defeated LESKI by a waza-ari score from a low uchi-mata.

-70kg: Invincible Briton CONWAY completes Grand Slam treble

Olympic bronze medallist Sally CONWAY (GBR) won Grand Slam gold for the third time in her career with a rousing display in the -70kg category. CONWAY defeated The Hague Grand Prix bronze medallist Miriam BUTKEREIT (GER) after taking the contest to the ground and threatening with both osaekomi and the kansetsu-waza and the home judoka was unable to find a route away from the imminent danger. A trademark juji-gatame from the Scottish judoka settled the final.

In the first semi-final Junior Pan American Championships gold medallist Ellen SANTANA (BRA) had to submit to a juji-gatame from CONWAY while in the second semi-final BUTKEREIT beat world number 36 Hilde JAGER (NED) on the ground as the Dutch judoka elected to tap out while trapped in a holdddown.

The first bronze medal was awarded to two-time world medallist Maria BERNABEU (ESP) who trapped JAGER in osaekomi with a sankaku-gatame for ippon. Spain’s BERNABEU returned to an IJF podium for the first time since 2017 and was understandably elated as she jumped into the arms of her coach in celebration.

The second bronze medal was won by SANTANA, her first on the Grand Slam stage, as she overshadowed Asian Games silver medallist KIM Seongyeon (KOR). Brazilian youngster SANTANA earned her first IJF World Judo Tour medal by pinning down her vastly more experienced opponent for ippon.

Olympic champion ONO Shohei (JPN) won his fourth Grand Slam gold medal at the expense of his teammate, double Olympic bronze medallist and three-time world champion EBINUMA Masashi (JPN) in a rematch of the Osaka Grand Slam final. ONO won a tense final by a waza-ari from a sacrifice technique as he marginally outperformed his high school colleague-turned rival.

In the first semi-final EBINUMA submitted The Hague Grand Prix winner Musa MOGUSHKOV (RUS) while in the second semi-final ONO defeated former Junior World Championships bronze medallist Somon MAKHMADBEKOV (TJK) with a brilliant foot sweep.

-81kg: World silver medallist FUJIWARA closes in on Tokyo 2019 selection

World Championships silver medallist FUJIWARA Sotaro (JPN) clinched his third Grand Slam title from four Grand Slam outings as he edged past World Judo Masters silver medallist Aslan LAPPINAGOV (RUS) in the -81kg final. The Japanese judoka outworked his Russian rival who was penalised on three occasions and was therefore disqualified to gift the runaway leaders of the medal table their gold seventh medal in Düsseldorf with one day to go.

In the first semi-final Paris Grand Slam winner Dominic RESSEL (GER) was thrown by FUJIWARA for a waza-ari score after two and a half minutes of golden score. In the second semi-final LAPPINAGOV defeated Abu Dhabi Grand Slam silver medallist Matthias CASSE (BEL) in golden score when the promising Belgium was disqualified after being penalised with this third shido.

The first bronze medal was won by CASSE after Zagreb Grand Prix bronze medallist Anri EGUTIDZE (POR) had to withdraw 67 seconds into golden score.
